Liquid Glass against mould

To get the problem under control permanently, mould spores must be deprived of the basis for settling and multiplying. Nanopool has developed a method that optimises surfaces of all kinds – be it concrete, plastic, rubber or textiles – in such a way that harmful microorganisms can no longer adhere to them, feed on them or multiply.

“Liquid Glass” is the magic word. Due to its specific surface properties, glass offers hardly any point of attack for the adhesion and spread of microorganisms. Using the glass raw material silicon dioxide – SiO2 for short – Nanopool has succeeded in developing a liquid that forms a barrier layer on surfaces of all kinds, comparable to an ultra-thin glazing, and thus permanently repels mould spores. Even on textiles, the coating bonds with the surface in a flexibly stretchable way.

 

Proven effectiveness

The effectiveness of this process has been demonstrated in numerous expert investigations as well as in practical customer applications. In a supermarket in Germany, for example, around 2,500 square metres of interior ceiling surfaces were glazed with the NP® coating. Comparative contact tests showed only 2 mould spores per 28.3 cm² on the coated surface, while the untreated surface exhibited a dangerous lawn of mould. This result gains additional significance because any last remaining spores on the NP® Liquid Glass layer no longer have any basis for further multiplication and spread.

This method also provides lasting protection for air-conditioning and evaporation systems in all areas. In an industrial butchery, for example, the drip tray of an evaporator was treated with the NP® technology. Where a harmful biofilm had previously formed regularly on the surface of the collected liquid, the system could be classified as germ-free after treatment – and the indoor air quality as significantly healthier.

Numerous environmental and science awards also attest to the function and safety of the solution. In the healthcare sector, the NP® process was named national winner in the Science category by “Land der Ideen” (Land of Ideas) for the application “Liquid Glass against hospital germs”. Likewise, the British National Health Service (NHS) honoured the NP® technology as a smart solution against contamination of surfaces in clinical settings.

 

Rendering existing mould permanently harmless

A further advantage of the patented coating process is the possibility of sealing contaminated surfaces in such a way that even growth lodged deep in the material can no longer cause any harm to health. The mould-ridden materials are permanently glazed with the NP® technology. This reliable and safe sealing stops both multiplication and the release of spores, so the microorganisms no longer enter the air we breathe. The Liquid Glass layer permanently and securely encloses microorganisms that are otherwise almost impossible to remove (e.g. black mould).

Due to its unique structure, the Liquid Glass barrier cannot flake off. The layer protects permanently and can simply be painted over with wall paint. The solution is proven to be completely harmless to people, nature and surfaces. Application is carried out by simple spraying.
